Caliber is a program for Windows, Mac and Linux that has absolutely all the tools for working with books. This is not just “another e-reader.” Caliber allows you to convert books to different formats, use your computer as a cloud library, and have access to all the largest online libraries.

And, of course, in addition to everything else, Caliber is still “another e-reader.”

When you first launch Caliber, it will offer to use your computer as a cloud library for mobile devices. The function is very interesting and allows you to connect from your gadget to your computer and download from it all the books that you have selected in advance. Unfortunately, this feature only works with iOS devices that have the Marvin reader installed, which we already did.

Caliber's search includes resources such as Litres, Google Books, Amazon, Biblio, and dozens of others. However, no one is stopping you from downloading your books yourself and then uploading them to Caliber.

A separate advantage was the conversion function. The program supports more than 15 formats and allows you to customize every little detail during conversion. For me, as a person who often converts PDF books to EPUB or FB2, this turned out to be very useful. Since in other programs the layout is very confusing.

Caliber is the ultimate tool for working with books. I don't think I can think of a single competitor. If you often download books from your computer, convert them, or read them, then you should definitely try it.

Caliber is a rather interesting utility for all fans of e-books, which has quite a lot of capabilities for organizing electronic libraries, reading e-books and converting file formats between each other.

Key features of Caliber

To begin with, we note that this software product is absolutely free and has no restrictions on use. In addition, the application is cross-platform and can work in completely different operating systems. And finally, the program is open source, so that, if desired, any user can change the program at their discretion or add something new to it.

As for the organization of the electronic library, it has a clear hierarchical structure. Moreover, after organizing the e-books, in the absence of a program, you can still easily find the required file on your computer’s hard drive. A rather interesting feature of the organization of files is that the same book in different formats is presented in the library structure as one book. In addition, the program supports a fairly impressive number of e-book formats. These are CBZ, CBR, CBC, EPUB, FB2, HTML, LIT, LRF, MOBI, ODT, PDF, PRC**, PDB, PML, RB, RTF, TCR and TXT. The most interesting thing is that the program easily allows you to convert formats between each other. Moreover, whatever you like. And, of course, the application also provides a built-in “book reader”.

A rather unusual feature of this utility is that it is capable of preparing files for use on completely different mobile devices or readers. Moreover, when synchronizing with such devices, the program automatically selects the required format, and if it is not available, converts it to the most suitable format for a certain type of device. Plus, the application is capable of independently searching the Internet for, say, book covers and uploading metadata to electronic libraries. In addition, there is support for news that can be converted into a regular e-book. To date, more than three hundred news feeds are supported.

Finally, the application contains a web server for remote access and management of libraries and allows you to send books using email accounts. In addition, the search system is quite interesting. This can be done by title, author, publication date, date added, size, book series, rating, and much more. There is also support for tags, comments and reviews.

So, we can say that this application is quite universal, both in terms of reading and organizing electronic libraries, and in terms of converting various formats of electronic books among themselves. Moreover, the program is an indispensable tool when synchronizing with different types of readers, since it automatically determines the required format for playback on a particular device. In general, it was completed with an A plus.

Since I am a big fan of reading, at what point my gaze fell on e-books. The benefits were obvious to me. Especially with frequent business trips. Weight, size, convenience, and the price of electronic versions of books (I prefer honest purchase of texts). After using several copies, I settled on the Sony PRS-505. At first I was confused by the lrf format, but a solution was quickly found - online fb2 to lrf converters. Online - because I am a Linux user both at home and at work, plus I use WinXP for games at home. In general, complete confusion. But when I started looking for books in English, I came across a bunch of other formats from pdf to epub and even more exotic options. Plus, there are a lot of books on computers and it has become difficult to understand them (I’m not the only eBook user in the family). In general, there is a need for some kind of management of this chaos and convenient conversion of formats, plus native support for Linux. In one of the comments on Habré I saw a mention of Caliber. I downloaded it, installed it and liked it. Now I use it completely. Therefore, I would like to make a brief overview of this program.

About the program and its capabilities

Caliber is a free, cross-platform, open source application designed for e-book users with a lot of features.
  • Library management.
Caliber gives you the ability to manage your book collection. The concept of the program is that many identical books in different formats are presented as one book in the library.
You can sort and search books by metadata such as: title, author, publication date, date added, size, book series, rating, etc. There is also support for tags and comments and reviews.
You can easily find the book you need using a simple search or use the advanced search.
The program organizes the books you add into a clear hierarchical folder structure on your hard drive, so that even without the program you can sort through your library.
Plus caliber can search online book metadata and covers by title/author or ISBN. The metadata search system is determined by plugins and can easily be expanded independently (with literature in English it searches with a bang)
  • Book converter
Caliber supports converting from a bunch of formats to a bunch of others.
Input Formats: CBZ, CBR, CBC, EPUB, FB2, HTML, LIT, LRF, MOBI, ODT, PDF, PRC**, PDB, PML, RB, RTF, TCR, TXT
Output Formats: EPUB, FB2, OEB, LIT, LRF, MOBI, PDB, PML, RB, PDF, TCR, TXT

Converting has many options, such as changing the font size, creating a book structure and footnotes, etc.
  • Synchronization with readers
Caliber uses a modular reader driver system that allows you to add new devices. Now the program already supports many devices. When synchronizing, Caliber itself selects the most suitable format or, if the required one is not available, converts it to the required one. It also adds all the necessary metadata and information about book series to the reader.
  • Downloading news and converting it into a book
Caliber already contains 3 hundred news sources. And after reading the manual, it will not be difficult for you to add new sources
  • Built-in book reader
Caliber contains built-in readers for all supported book formats.
  • Web content server
Caliber contains a built-in web server for remote library management. She can also download and send books to you by email.
A demo of using Caliber can be viewed.

Installation

For Windows, everything is simple - we take the distribution kit and install it.
For Mac.
For Linux, look in the repositories of your distribution, you will most likely find it.
If you are using something less common (in Archa, for example, it is only available in AUR) or we want to have the latest version, then we run the script
sudo python -c "import urllib2; exec urllib2.urlopen("http://status.calibre-ebook.com/linux_installer").read(); main()"

Or we take the sources and follow the instructions
http://calibre-ebook.com/download_linux

When you launch it for the first time, we configure the program using the wizard.
Select the language and library location. Next, select the model of our reader. And the installation is complete. We can enjoy work.

Experience of use

When I started working with this library manager, the first thing I did was throw my entire collection there. It didn't take much time, since everything was in one folder, which had something similar to order, but not perfect. Having chosen to add all the books from this folder, Caliber scanned its contents and transferred it to its library, sorting everything neatly into folders.

Then it will be a pleasure to use it. I really liked the conversion of books into the format I needed and the downloading of information about books by ISBN. I had some of the books on fb2 and there were already some descriptions of the books. I tidied this up a little and checked the book series and the consistency of the spelling of the authors' names, I connected my Sony reader and instructed to put all the books on the reader card. Caliber itself converted all the books into lrf and carefully placed them on the reader’s memory card.

I also really liked the built-in content server. At work, the computer is constantly connected to the Internet and has a white address, then my main library became there. It’s convenient because I download all the books at work and throw them into a single library. If I have the reader with me, I’ll sync it right away. Or I download it from my library at home and synchronize it with my home library. But the most convenient thing is when you go somewhere in the city or on a business trip and forget the reader, you can go on your phone and download the book you need to finish reading even on your mobile. Or it’s convenient to share a book with a friend.

For books in English, the program finds all the metadata and cover with a bang, with Russian ones it’s more difficult. I didn’t test the news download function deeply as it was particularly unnecessary. But at first glance it is quite convenient.

Conclusion

Having started looking for a book format converter for Linux, I eventually found an excellent library manager, which I now use on all my computers under different OSes and finally got my library in order. No major bugs were noticed and the program does not cause any complaints. Therefore, I would like to express my gratitude to its creator Kovid Goyal and recommend it to all e-book owners and reading fans.

THANK YOU so much for the very useful information in the article. Everything is presented very clearly. It feels like a lot of work has been done to analyze the operation of the eBay store

    • Thank you and other regular readers of my blog. Without you, I would not be motivated enough to dedicate much time to maintaining this site. My brain is structured this way: I like to dig deep, systematize scattered data, try things that no one has done before or looked at from this angle. It’s a pity that our compatriots have no time for shopping on eBay because of the crisis in Russia. They buy from Aliexpress from China, since goods there are much cheaper (often at the expense of quality). But online auctions eBay, Amazon, ETSY will easily give the Chinese a head start in the range of branded items, vintage items, handmade items and various ethnic goods.

      • Next

What is valuable in your articles is your personal attitude and analysis of the topic. Don't give up this blog, I come here often. There should be a lot of us like that. Email me I recently received an email with an offer that they would teach me how to trade on Amazon and eBay. And I remembered your detailed articles about these trades. area I re-read everything again and concluded that the courses are a scam. I haven't bought anything on eBay yet. I am not from Russia, but from Kazakhstan (Almaty). But we also don’t need any extra expenses yet. I wish you good luck and stay safe in Asia.

  • It’s also nice that eBay’s attempts to Russify the interface for users from Russia and the CIS countries have begun to bear fruit. After all, the overwhelming majority of citizens of the countries of the former USSR do not have strong knowledge of foreign languages. No more than 5% of the population speak English. There are more among young people. Therefore, at least the interface is in Russian - this is a big help for online shopping on this trading platform. eBay did not follow the path of its Chinese counterpart Aliexpress, where a machine (very clumsy and incomprehensible, sometimes causing laughter) translation of product descriptions is performed. I hope that at a more advanced stage of development of artificial intelligence, high-quality machine translation from any language to any in a matter of seconds will become a reality. So far we have this (the profile of one of the sellers on eBay with a Russian interface, but an English description):
